I just finished fabricating a rear winch mount for my Wife's 2009 Renegade 500. I turned out really well. Due to the problematic electrical system on the Renegades when it comes to running a winch I designed the rear winch mount to hold an additional battery for winching too. The second battery has yet to be added but you can see in the photos where it will go. It will fit to the righ of the stock battery and just below the solenoids. I will have to do some more cutting to the removable plastic shroud which covers the solenoids but this shoud be no problem. The first pic is from the left hand side and it is a 2000lb superwinch that I have installed. They are nice and compact.

Completed some upgrades today to my Renegade 500 dual battery setup. I wired the winches, front and rear, to the second battery and separated the two batteries with an electronic diode type isolator. The setup works great and I can now winch at idle (until the second battery dies of course)without the computer freaking out and killing the motor. Both batteries charge but there is now no drain from main battery to the second battery when the winches are operated. Before the isolator this would drop the main battery voltage far enough that the computer would go into a mode where the idle would get very rough and the motor would promptly die. The only way to winch before adding the isolator was to keep the revs over 4000rpm. I'll include a few pictures and a scan of the stock and "option 2" wiring diagram that I used to make this system work. Its a tight squeeze for the second winch contactor and isolator but they do fit with a little work.

A shot of the bottom of the isolator showing where I had to trim away some of the heat sink fins to provide clearance for the shift linkage.

Here is the wiring diagram. Stock is what came from the factory. Option 2 is the one to use. Run the red wire from the voltage regulator to the ALT(centre)terminal of the isolator. Terminal 1 of the isolator runs to the positive main battery unswitched side of the starter solenoid. Terminal 2 of the isolator runs to the positive terminal of the secondary battery.

One more thing....install an auto reset 30 amp breaker close to the battery on the positive wire that runs to terminal two of the isolator.

great job vince looks clean. I havent even had to use my front winch yet but after reading about the can am's electrical warning lights ect. ive been thinking of running 2 battery's no you got me thinking maybe 2 winches. Really in most case's im going to want to go back not forward once im stuck so good idea.

Not to be negative, but why would you want all that extra weight? Not to mention messing with Can Am electrical systems is just asking for trouble. I have been seriously stuck before, and never have I needed a rear winch, and a 2nd battery seems so unnecessary. Just keep your RPM's up when winching. 5k RPM is plenty to keep the dreaded "low battery" away.
Once again, I'm not trying to be a dick. It's just my point of view on this setup.

Where we ride it is often easier coming out backwards than forwards...sometimes not so much. Two winches ALWAYS solve whatever problem you get yourself into and you can take care of it alone.

Ok..it worked great in the shop but not so well on the ride. I ended up killing the main battery because I didn't check to confirm that the isolator (a three terminal isolator) was passing a charge through to the main battery. It turns out that the voltage regulator needs to read a voltage from the battery to excite the stator. If there is no voltage sensed by the voltage regulator from the battery then the stator does not send juice to charge the batteries. The reason the voltage regulator does not sense voltage is because the diode between the ALT and T1 terminals of the isolator does not let voltage flow in towards the regulator as I had it hooked up in my "option 2" diagram. "Option 1" although it allows the main battery to charge does not work as the main battery will equalize with the secondary battery through the ALT terminal. The solution is a four terminal isolator...I ordered one today. It hooks in as per my "option 2" diagram but there is a fourth terminal that you wire to a 12v+ signal present when the ignition is turned on. This signal allows the stator to excite and then send the charge current through the voltage regulator to the ALT terminal of the isolator and in turn through to T1 (priority) and T2 if T1 is topped up. I'm hoping that the new isolator, on its way to me now will cure the problem. Thanks to Cam a buddy of mine who figured out the problem and to Jim an engineer with Cole Hersee who confirmed what Cam suspected.

All is well with the Rene 500 dual battery setup now. Put over a hundred km on the unit this past weekend and no issues whatsoever. In short the 3 terminal isolator does not work hooked up as per the directions. There is no 12v signal to excite the stator. I purchased a 4 terminal Cole Hersee isolator (the fourth terminal for an ignition 12v signal) and modified it by cutting a few fins to get it to fit. Had to mount it slightly skewed to get it to fit where the original three terminal isolator fit; the new one is about a half inch longer. I wired the three terminals as before with the fourth connected to the 12v signal present at the 12v lighter plug when the ignition is turned on. I now get charge at both batteries and the main battery does not run down while the engine is running. I'll post some photos soon. So follow my diagram as shown replacing the three terminal isolator with a four terminal unit.

Nice work - I have had my old King face down in river when the ice gave out, It would have been handy to winch it out from the backside...
