Dalton Clutch Kit for Yamaha Grizzly 700

by nyroc, 2008-03-03

Dalton Industries has a clutch kit (DBW700Y) for the Yamaha Grizzly 700 consisting of 12 weights that let you choose how you want to tune your clutch. The 700 Grizzly already has a stiffer secondary spring than the 660, so the kit for the 700 does not need a stiffer secondary spring.

I installed 26" Carlisle Mud Wolf tires on my Grizzly 700, which are quite heavy for their size. I unwittingly drag raced BucketofGut's Prairie 650 while I had these tires on, and as a result of loosing I got a lot of sand in my face (and mouth). But I refused to take these tires off due to their superior traction in all terrains. So, I needed to put back the power.

I chose to follow Dalton's recommendation of 4 of the heavier weights and 4 of the lighter ones. After installation, I was able to accelerate much more quickly, ride wheelies and beat the neighbor's dog in a race along the fence. The engine did not have a takeoff delay anymore and I felt that the Grizzly was more enjoyable to ride.

In the kit, you get 8 14.7g weights, and 4 17g weights. The stock weights are 18.5g without the plastic cover, so if you measure yours with the plastic installed they will be 20g or so. Dalton recommends the following:

4x14.7 and 4x18.5g for stock size but heavier tires lower elevation (0-4000 ft)
4x14.7 and 4x17 for 26" and 27" lower elevation (0-4000 ft)
8x14.7 for 26" and 27" High Elevation
8x14.7 28" and bigger aggressive mud tires

*See the Dalton installation instructions for more tuning details.

Installing the Dalton ATV Clutch kit on my Grizz 700 was very simple. You can read the tech tip on changing weights here. However, when you remove the 8 OEM weights, you must remove the OEM metal weights from the plastic collars because the Dalton weights do not have these plastic collars. This was actually very easy to do, and a little bit fun. I found a socket that would just fit inside the plastic collar, but still make contact with the metal insert. I found another socket that a Dalton weight would just barely fit inside, but the plastic collar would not. I lined these up in a vice so that the sockets would push the metal insert out of the collar as I closed the vice. The metal insert will split the lip that it exits from, and it needs to exit from the side of the plastic collar that has the green paint on the lip.

Installation similar to removal, except I used a washer to protect the plastic collar, and I pusehd the metal insert into the collar part way, then I used a socket to push the metal insert all the way into the collar.

I have been thoroughly happy with the clutch kit installed in my grizzly, and I have left it just like Dalton recommends. I don't have any performance modifications yet, but just installing the kit has made the grizzly run just a bit better than it did without. I very pleased.
