OMI Greaseable Steering Stem Mount for Yamaha Grizzly

by nyroc, 2008-07-17

A few grizzly 700 owners, including myself, have noticed our steering getting a little harder. That is a bit disheartening on a machine that you bought because of the electronic power steering. The problem starts with a little groan or squeak that you hear sometimes while turning the handlebars and gets worse. The cause is the factory grease is gone and/or has gotten dirty.

OMI has created a greaseable steering mount that is easy to install and fits exactly like OEM. It has double the bearing surface area, better seals and results in reduced friction for easier steering. Upon inspecting my old OEM mount, I noticed it is not made of the same low friction material as the OMI one, and my OEM mount has a bit of galling on the wear surfaces. I only have around 400 miles, and although I have ridden in the mud a little I would say I think I have been fairly easy on the machine overall. I was really surprised to feel the steering become sticky and squeaky and to see the mount in such bad shape at 400 miles. I was happy to install the OMI steering mount Grizzly 700 not only because it appears to be better made and is greaseable, but it has a reputation of being a good solution on other yamaha ATVs. This greaseable steering mount fits all Yamahas and I have read reports of positive steering improvement when used on other models.

I went to work installing the mount per the Steering Stem tech tip. When I had the OEM mount removed, I noticed the OMI product is obviously much larger, made of a different material, and the seals look like they can take a bit more use than the OEM ones (see photo below).

I simply removed the OEM spacers, cable guide plate, and bolt retainer plate and put them on the OMI mount (see photo below).

I greased the mount and reinstalled per the above mentioned tech tip and it fit and worked perfectly. Now I know that I could have just greased the OEM mount. That may be true, but it is just enough of a pain to get that mount out every time that I would much rather upgrade to the OMI mount that I can simply re-grease and save me a lot of work.

The grease zerk location is not accessible without removing the battery cover, the air filter/gas tank cover, and the gage pod (see photo below). However, those covers are much easier to remove compared to getting the stem mount out. Greasing this with a grease gun will not be hard to do at all.

Why not drill out the OEM and install a grease nipple?

Anyone know if this would fit the brute??? The brute one looks the same just not sure of size. The one on the brute sucks. To small and no grease fitting. I can install a fitting but the wider version here would provide better stability.

Hondadon, you could just put a zerk in the OEM one, but the OMI one is more durable material.

Brute SBA, I could measure my OEM one for ya to see if the shaft is the same. If it is, it would be fairly easy to make the conversion if the bolts are't too far off.

Nyroc, I would really appreciate that. I would imagine they are very similar. Probably exactly the same and from the same supplier. The OMI is so much beefier. I only have 400 miles on my brute and my stock one is sooo worn out. I was going to replace it and drill for a grease fitting, but it really needs more surface area.

SBA, the Griz bushing I.D. is 32mm, and the bolt holes are about 54mm apart.

NYROC, I finally was able to disassemble my Brute. The Measurements I got were 31.85 mm diameter and the bolts were 54.75 mm apart. Seeing they look exactly alike and the measurements seem right on, I'm betting they are exactly the same. So they should fit the brute. The only thing I will have to do is trim some plastic to fit the larger clamp in. Once again thanks for the help and I'll let you know the final outcome when I order the part and install it.
