Yamaha Rhino models now part of free repair program
Powersports Business
Tuesday March 31, 2009
Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a free repair program to address safety issues for about 120,000 Rhino 450 and Rhino 660 vehicles, according to the (CPSC).
The CPSC staff has investigated more than 50 incidents involving 46 driver and passenger deaths in these two Rhino models, a press release stated. More than two-thirds of the cases involved rollovers and many involved riders that were not wearing seatbelts.
Of the rollover-related deaths and reported injuries, many appear to involve turns at relatively low speeds and on level terrain, the press release stated. The reported deaths occurred between the fall of 2003 when the vehicles were first distributed through this year.
In a written statement, acting CPSC Chairman Nancy Nord said “I personally have been so concerned about the number of deaths and injuries associated with these vehicles that I directed staff to step up their investigative efforts. I am very pleased that the agency and Yamaha have identified safety repairs and I strongly encourage owners of the Rhino 450 and 660 models to get these repairs as soon as possible.”
The repair program is designed to reduce rollover risk, as well as improve handling and keep riders’ limbs inside the vehicles.
A press release said Yamaha has agreed to voluntarily suspend sale of these models immediately until the agreed-upon repairs are made.
In a press release issued by Yamaha, the manufacturer said, “While more than 99 percent of Rhino owners use the product without incident, CPSC and Yamaha examined the small segment of Rhino owners who have had an incident on the product to develop modifications that may help reduce the chance of rollover and improve vehicle handling in certain situations. Yamaha stands behind the Rhino and is proud of the Rhino’s safety record and safety features.”

Info from Yamaha on the repair program.
Repair Campaign Announcement
In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. will be offering certain free repairs for all Rhino 660 and Rhino 450 Side x Side (SxS) models.
This is not a recall. This is a voluntary repair program.
The CPSC says the following two repairs are needed “to help reduce the chance of rollover and improve vehicle handling”:
Installation of a spacer on each of the rear wheels.
Removal of the rear anti-sway bar.
Repair parts meeting CPSC requirements will be available to be installed by your Yamaha dealer as quickly as possible. We will send dealers full repair instructions and will send a follow-up letter to all registered owners as soon as these parts are available.
You should not operate your Rhino 660 or 450 vehicle until it is modified with these repair parts. If you have not already done so, you should also have the free doors and additional passenger handhold installed on your Rhino.
Even though the CPSC did not include the Rhino 700 in its announcement, Yamaha is also voluntarily implementing the same free repairs. Please suspend use of the Rhino 700 until repairs are completed.
Yamaha stands firmly behind the Rhino SxS as a safe, reliable off-road vehicle. The Rhino is the best-selling SxS vehicle in the market and has been shown to be the best in its class, with many industry and press awards to its credit. Indeed, more than 99% of Rhinos sold to date are being enjoyed by enthusiastic owners without reported incidents.
Yamaha always advises the safe, responsible use of our products. As a reminder, Rhino users should always wear helmets and seatbelts, as well as follow all instructions and warnings in the on-product labels, owner’s manual, and other safety materials. The Rhino is only recommended for operators 16 and older with a valid driver’s license. Every passenger must be tall enough to place both feet on the floorboard with his or her back against the seat back.
If you need additional information about this repair campaign, please contact your Yamaha dealer. If you still have unanswered questions, please call Yamaha at 800-962-7926. You may also wish to go to the CPSC’s website at cpsc.gov or call their hotline at 800-638-2772.

The question I'm seeing asked on the other forums are who's going to warranty the axles from the added width of the spacers and do they get to keep the sway bar.
Interesting that they say it's optional but also say to quit using the machine until the repairs are made.

That is a good question.
Have you heard how large of a spacer they are going to add?

Here is another quote from another forum.
"The wheel spacers aren't available for dealers yet, this will take some time. The helmet incentive isn't available to dealers yet either. At the current time, all that can be done is the swing arm removal. And yes, you can bring it home ( for now )
The next issue to arise, like Dawber mentioned are the claims due to the spacers on wheel bearings and etc.
I know of a couple dealers at least, that are really dreading this.
It's believed this is the first of a couple different moves Yamaha is going to make as a result of the pending litigation from injuries and deaths"
How long do they expect people to not use their machines.

I drove past the local Yamaha dealer today and where they usually have 5 or 6 Rhinos outside, they didn't have any.

Crap like this is total lunacy. Where does idiotic litigation like this end? The CPSC is a bunch of idiotic bureaucratic know-nothings. The Rhino is perfectly safe as-is at the hands of a competent operator. COMPETENT being the key word here. Booo to Yamaha for caving to these government bullies. What I want to know is how REMOVING the rear sway bar will decrease roll overs? Seems to me like more body roll is not what we're after in this situation. Our tax dollar at work here fellas. Washington dumb@sses at their finest

I yanked My swaybar today, and took off My highlifter spacers so when I take it in they wont keep the bar.I paid for the dang thing, Im gonna keep it. I'll end up useing it for something. Maybe I'll end up puttin the new spacers on the front.

We put in a rear sway bar on our AC650/AC700 as it had nasty body roll. Did the same to both of our Chevy trucks. Makes a huge difference in keeping the machine flat. I shredded my "voluntary repair letter".
All removing the bar does is freak the crap out of the user since it'll want to roll up on the suspension quicker when pushing it, so they get off the throttle quicker.
Our Rhino is stupid stable at all speeds. ONLY time there would be an issue is crank the wheels, pin the throttle and try to cut a s**t hook or donut. Its tall, has a higher center of gravity, and if the tires bite instead of slide, then it's going over. Maybe they should install a yaw sensor and a flip down arm that cuffs you upside the head if you do that and it flips.
