VDI EFI install instructions for computer dummies

by Dr Z, 2007-09-13

PROGRAMMING THE VDI

First, download all of the needed software from VDI. Go to http://velocitydevices.com and click the support button. Scroll down (near bottom) and click "ECU Software and Documentation - For Fuel Injected Machines", then click "CopperheadEFI Rev5.3" to download the ECU flash program. Save the file to a known location, preferably to a folder on your desktop for simplicity. Go to where you saved the file you just downloaded and double-click the file and install it. To verify if it's on your PC, click on the "start" button, click "programs", and you will see "Copperhead EFI" folder, and under that a "CopperheadEFI" shortcut to the program.

Now, we have two more items to download. Neither of these two items are applications, so you will not need to install them like applications. You just need to remember where you saved them. I created a folder named VDI on my desktop to put them in. They will be uploaded to the VDI via the Copperhead EFI application you downloaded. One is the firmware file, the other is the map.

To download the Firmware, click "ECU Firmware", then click Suzuki, then right click and download "2005+_KQ700_Rev5.3.vdi" (or whichever machine you have). Save it in the VDI folder.

To download a map, click "ECU Maps (EFI)" If you just downloaded firmware you need to click on "Parent Directory" to get to this folder. Click on the map you want and save to the VDI folder.

AT THIS POINT, BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH UPLOADING THE SOFTWARE TO YOUR QUAD, YOU NEED TO CONFIRM YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:
-One application fully installed: CopperheadEFI
-Firmware 5.3
-At least one map, preferably in a folder with the firmware marked specifically for 5.3

If you do not have all of this, you need to back up and ask for help, as all are essential before moving forward.

PROGRAMMING THE VDI

STEP ONE-Load your map into the USB Memory Interface
You must have a map loaded before the atv will run. You should use the maps that are for the 5.3 firmware if you have the 5.3 version loaded to the VDI.
1- Connect the USB Memory Interface to your computer. DO NOT connect the USB Memory Interface to the VDI.
2- Open the CopperheadEFI program.
3- Click the yellow file icon at the top. It looks like a file folder opening.
4- A new window will open called Open. Find the map file you downloaded. If you created a file called 5.3 to hold your downloads it should be in that file.
5- To load the KingQuad 700 OEM/87 octane stock pipe map, choose the one called KQ700 OEM_87.efi. Select it and click open. If you only downloaded one map it will be the only option to pick.
6- You should now see the values populated with different numbers. You can make tuning adjustments on this screen.
7- Click Map at the top of the screen and select Write to Pod. The Pod is the USB Memory Interface.
You might get a screen that says Press OK when ready. If you do, make sure the USB Memory Interface is connected to the computer and press OK.
If you get an error or retry screen, click OK and Click the Map and Write to Pod again. It should work the second time.
8- A new window will open that says Writing Data to Pod.
9- After it finishes you will get a new window called Success. Click OK and close the CopperheadEFI program.
10- Disconnect the USB Memory Interface from the computer. You are now ready to load the map to the VDI.

STEP TWO-If you are not installing new firmware skip to STEP THREE
You must install firmware before your map is installed automatically to the VDI.(unless you are just updating a map)
1- Connect your computer to the USB Memory Interface (black box) and connect the USB Memory Interface to the VDI.
2- Open the Copperheadefi program.
3- Turn on key on the atv.
4- Click Flash at the top of the screen and select Write Flash
5- A new screen will come up called open. Find the file called 2005+_KQ700_Rev5.3.vdi. Select it and click the open button. A new screen called Programming CDI will open and it should load the firmware automatically.
6- When the firmware is finished loading, your map will load automatically and the light on the VDI will turn on solid.
7- Turn off the key and remove the USB Memory Interface from the VDI.
You skip STEP THREE until you want to load a new map to the VDI.

STEP THREE-If you want to load a new map and you already have firmware version 5.3 uploaded to the VDI, follow STEP ONE and skip STEP TWO above.
1- Follow STEP ONE to load the map you want into the USB Memory Interface.
2- Connect the USB Memory Interface to the VDI only. (computer not connected)
3- Turn on the key. The USB Memory Interface will automatically load the map. This may be instantaneous or it could take about 5 seconds depending on how much info needs changed. (per Lyle)
4- When the map is loaded you should see a steady red light on the VDI (not the interface) at this point. (Lyle said some may be more like amber.) The display will say CHEC also.
5- Turn off the key.
6- Disconnect the USB Memory Interface from the VDI and you are ready to ride.

If you have any problems, please ask for help.

Need help please!

Using Copperhead EFI USB Application 2.0, at step TWO, after opening the file which contains the firmware (4.1) the application freezes or, sometimes, displays Programming CDI window which reads: Writing page 0 and stays there half an hour or so, with no progress. Is there a way to completely erase the EEPROM and start from scratch? The VDI is now in an unusable state

The eeprom maps are older. You need to use the maps that are currently on the VDI website if you are trying to load the 4.1 firmware. Like KQ Viking said in the First Batch post, re download the files and try again.

When I load the 2.0 it doesn't go to the map screen like the 1.0 version or 1.1 version did. It says comlete but doesn't take me anywhere for the 4.1 version.

So now I'm stuck the the check light and non runner

JJJ-
1) Did you turn off the key and unplug the interface? I'm assuming so.
2) Were you trying to reload the 4.1 or just a map? Once you have the 4.1 installed you do not have to do it again. You can just load the map only.
3) You can load a map only by putting it on the interface from your computer and connecting only the interface to the VDI and turning on the key. See STEP THREE in the instructions.
Let me know if this doesn't help.

Printed off the directions and reloaded everything off VDI's website. Got it going, now going to try your map.

You don't happen to have a dummy to teach this dummy do you.

JJJ-
I hope it's native's map you're talking about loading because I haven't tried anything different yet. I've been stuck in front of this dang computer rewriting directions and winning a bid for an awesome Widmer Hefe beer tap to use as a shift lever. I'll post a pic in the shift lever post when I get it mounted.

Yep Natives map

Once again I really appreciate everyones help. For some reason I think the old first way was easier, but now that I have it up and running maps are going to be easier to change.

Native,
Your map runs really strong for me but smell a little rich at idle, what should I look into changing?

NHquadGuy
I got some trail riding in this weekend. I started out with Natives map and pegging the throttle it was some wild power, but at trail speed (15-25 mph) it had a major stutter on my machine. Came back to the campground and loaded the 87/91 HMF map just as Lyle had it and loved it, good trail power (almost to much) and could wheelie at will in High.

I need to figure out the symptoms of lean vs rich. The 87_91 map is nearly perfect for me. With it, my idle seems slight off, but my TPS* may not be centered. I have a slight hesitation at WOT coming out of a dead stop. With the HMF map, I still have a miss at idle and it backfired a couple times when letting off the throttle (at about 25). So I know I'm a little rich there. I think I need to be somewhere in between the two maps. This is another busy week for me but hopefully I'll feel like playing with it a little bit before next weekend. Or if someone with a yosh gets it dialed in, I'll piggyback off them;-)

How do you love that power JJJ? I still can't get over it. My poor popo hasn't been ridden in a couple weeks, I bet she's feeling jealous.

NHquadGuy,
Love the power. . I think native has got the mapping figured out, but as we know every difference in machine is a difference in performance (pipe, air filter, elevation, etc. etc)

Another thing I guess I never thought to ask is how many of you dialing in maps have done the IAT relocation? I haven't done it and that could be another big factor.

So far the 87/91 HMF map is working great for me.

JJJ, I forgot all about the IAT (relocated) being a possible factor, good call. I have it installed on my king (by a service tech of course, and for all I know, he could have kept it and put it on his)

Hi everybody, Just got my Vdi installed that I bought off of cougar68. I put the new firmware 4.1 and the 87/91 oem map on it. I dont have the air sensor relocated, it is stock. It seems to be running perfect so far. Off the line it lifts the front wheels in High, Low I barel give it 1/4 throttle and it picks up (a little scary) lol. I love it so far, only put a mile or so on it. I will give it a good run this weekend through some swamps and straight aways.

this was my first experience with the vdi when i put on the 4.1. I originally had a problem due to the fact that I forgot to unzip the firmware 4.1 file. So that maybe a problem to check. I followed the dummy directions and all but for that mistake it turned out well. once you get the firmware on then you can turn the key off then back on so that the map can load, the red light should stay on and the pod will say chec. turn key off then on again and it should be ready to go. it was a little tricky at first but i got it figured out now. hope this helps.

Doogymd, I had the same problem. I clicked flash and it said sucess in the blink of an eye.
The problem was i unzipped the 4.1 filmware but when I loaded it i had used the zipped file.
Re tried with the unzipped file and when I clicked Flash it wrote all the pages and worked properly. Sounds like the same troble you are having. so make sure you load the 4.1 filmware
From the Unzipped folder. Hope this helps

lol this is getting confusing. when you click on flash an open dialog box pops up and should already be displaying the file you that you need to open it should show a picture of a blank sheet of paper then 2005+_KQ700_Rev4.1vdi. If it pops up and it says no file shown or something along those lines then the firmware you have has not been unzipped. The vdi will not load a zipped file, only an unzipped one. cause i had the same problem and it loaded very quickly but didnt work. so i looked more into it and i found out that i hadnt unzipped the firmware. if you need more help just ask.
