Looks like they made a few much needed changes. How does it weigh now though. I saw in quad magazine how they liked the handling very much. Looks good so far polaris. Will have to make further judgments once people start getting them though.

What is very interesting in the pictures is it looks like it has a Honda engine in it. This twin engine I think was designed different from other ATV twin engines. As jimmypsp700 said it is 99% new from the ground up. So this should be the talk of the town for many days and months to come. Polaris has really has kicked it up a notch with this new wheeler. It will be very interesting to see rider reports in the near future.

As far as the weight, Polaris has never been shy about being an heavy bike. But keeping in mind that heavy comes with another word. "Duty"

Example: Most people that buy the Polaris don't have to upgrade the flimsy tires that come with the Japan brand ATV's. Perfect example of added weight and "Heavy Duty".

Reno, that was my thought too, looks like a Honda motor setup. The big difference though, were did they put the CVT?

I like the changes they made, still a little to heavy duty for me. And if they would go with a traditional 4WD system(or at least offer an option) that would be even better yet.

Too bad that at the moment, it isn't legal in Wisconsin. (14" wheels are not allowed)

784 dry weight. Way too heavy for my type of riding. It would be good for doing farm chores.

http://www.atv.com/manufacturers/suzuki/2009-polaris-sportsman-first-look-863.html

"Both the single and twin-cylinder motors run the crankshaft down the middle of the Sportsman’s spine reminiscent of Honda’s engine positioning. But don’t use the H-word around Polaris people, they are a bit sensitive about this. The first thing you’ll be thinking when you preview the new Sportsman from the brake lever side will be Honda. But, that’s as far it goes. Honda should have powertrains like these!"

The CVT is on the rear.

Good infoprmation jim.

Here is some of that information.

But power comes in handy for many ATVers and the all-new, liquid-cooled 850 twin gives it. Expect upwards of 70-hp at 7,200 revs from this Polaris-built motor. Outfitted with electronically regulated fuel injection, this inline twin is the pride of Polaris engine designers.

You could hear that pride in the voice of Polaris senior design engineer Ron Danielson as he outlined the specifics of this engine for ATV.com. He was quick to credit the success of this engine to the hard work of Polaris’ joint design team. “Much of the design was done in Polaris in our Osceola (Wisconsin) engine facility,” he stated.

The 850 features dual balance shafts as a way to assure smoothness through the frame and to maximize rider comfort. Rubber engine mounts help, too. This engine comes with an overhead cam with four valves — two for intake and two for exhaust. To make sure that Polaris owners have as much electrical power to run accessories and such, the 2009 Sportsman 850 XP offers up to 450 watts of electrical output at idle.

Danielson explained that the engine was canted to better fit the new frame. But, he said, this engine packaging allows better heat management as it creates a more efficient placement for the exhaust system.

Going with a more powerful engine necessitated greater cooling capacity. You’ll find a 20% larger radiator and more efficient water pump to cool the 70 hp twin.

Yep, it sounds like a real winner!

I can't wait to see it in person and going up against the competition!
We have Can Am to thank for the 70HP rating. Cometition is GOOD!!!

So the CVT is on the back of the motor? I guess this new motor setup was already being used in the RZR, except the CVT sits behind the seats, not to hard to work on.

If it is back there, that looks tricky to work on.

FTR

I think that is a good observation. Then again it may just require a wheel removal. I will be watching the reports as they come in. This bike is really thinking outside the box. My hat's off to Polaris. Better mouse trap?? Maybe.

jimmy, thanks for the photos.

That is amazing how they get all that to fit. I take it that is the fuel tank up front.

did they call it the 850 b/c of 850cc's or 850lbs? This would be great for pulling stumps, plowing snow and mudding though...not sure about fast trail riding though. I had a sportsman and I pulled a 4000lb van out of the snow, can't imagine what this thing could do.

Toyeboy
I have had Polaris bikes in the past and was pretty happy with them. But the big turn off was 2 wheel engine braking and the Hillard clutches didn't disengage all the time and the clutches needed rebuilding at 4000 miles. With this 850 they have addressed those issues. Yes Polaris has always been known as the tank in the weight department. But with a strong twin as this bike is, it might really surprise a few motor heads.

RENO,

yeah it might. I'd like to test drive it to see if it feels like 70hp. I'd imagine the bigger cc sportsmans are a lot more fun, mine was only a 425cc and it was pretty slow so it's not really fair to compare to that anymore I guess.

But 784lbs dry is a lot my king is 602lb dry and I really like the nimbleness of it.
