Might be a silly question, but I’ll ask anyway. How do you guys clean your bikes once they get dunked in the mud? Seems like a pressure washer works the best but I’m just concerned about what to spray and what and where not to. When I bought it the dealership said that I could take the seat off and spray everything off under it because it was all sealed. Is there any place on the back that I should stay away from with a hose?

I would stay away from pressure washer. Use your water hose with a nozzle. Just keep spraying the mud it will come off with some time and water. The sooner you start the cleaning the easier it will be. Try not to spray directly in and around seals on engine and diffs. Usually just the pressure from your water hose will be fine. A pressure washer is quicker and more effective but if you slip up and spray around a seal or something you should not be hitting with a lot of pressure you might do some damage. I don't know of anything that sticks better than this red clay around here. I usually try to at least knock off the thick stuff the same day, then Ispray it down with greased lighting and hose it off. You could use other products like simple green etc. Go ahead and dive in the mud and "GITTER DONE"

Thanks for the suggestions. The cleaning of the bike hasnt prevented me from diving in!! :) I spent about an hour and a half the other day with a pressure washer getting mud and guk off. This was right after sinking it into the pit. It's worth the work I just wanted to make sure I wasnt going to regret spraying somewhere. Thanks again.

yeah I agree with BMK , stick with the hose. if you must use a pressure washer, be super careful of the radiator. when cleaning spray straight through with an up/down motion. keep it far enough away that you wont bend the fins. motor and diffs, once again, keep far enough away from the seals as to not hurt them. I've been using pressure washers on all my bikes for years with no problems except for my first one... thats where I learned "where not to spray" lol simple green will do wonders for you cleaning also.

although my friends tease the hell out of me I am a firm beliver in WAX...I wax my entire quad a couple times a year and when I do hit it with the hose the mud (including clay) comes right off. Last weekend we trailered our MUDDY qudas home in the rain and by time I got ro my house there was no mud left, the other quads were still a mess..WAX - IT :)

Where i ride the mud just don't come off with a hose, you have to use a pressure washer. It's the worst mud i've ever seen, if you walk in it your boots get bigger and heavier with every step.

I use whatever leftover auto wax I have from the summer. A heavy paste carnuba seems to work best, I even wax the rims and side walls of the tires, it really helps...try it if you don't like spending hours cleaning off mud.

Mach thats what mine looks like when I'm done lol usually takes washing with a hose at the riding spot, then after that go to the car wash, then come home and finish up with my pressure washer lol

Hey BFB, How often are you taking your winch apart for cleaning? I have been giving my winch a good dousing lately and wanted to know how well they stand up to it, and how often I should pull it apart.

I'd do it about every 9 or 10 months, pretty simple once you have done it once.

I use a cheap Wal-Mart purchased electric pressure washer not real powerful but it gets the job done without ruining the seals, electrical, etc.A good idea is to winch the front end off the ground and spray the underneath too.

After pressure washing I usually give it a soap sponge bath and a rinse with the garden house. Afterwards I spray and wipe the metal parts (a-arms, shocks, frame, etc.) with WD-40, then the plastic gets a shot of either Son-of-a-Gun or Turtle Wax Ice products.

My bike is a 2006 and still shines pretty good.

all of these methods and products work well. but if you want your plastics to look new, MAXIMA SC-1 CLEARCOAT. this is the greatest stuff i have ever used. water beads up like a wax and i spray it on my undercarriage and dont wipe it off. looks like it did when it was on the dealers floor and i have black plastic to boot.

Grizzkiller, I second that!! that maxxima works wonders on plastics. I use it on my brute and 2 dirtbikes and when your done its like brand new again. The stuff even smells like cotton candy so it will make you WANT to clean your machine more often! hehe

I spray on some Purple degreaser and let it sit for a bit and then just wash all the dirt and mud right off. Works well for me. Good luck.

I use a pressure washer and have had no issues. After getting the top done, I stand the quad on end and hit the underside real good. Once done I spray everything down with tire foam and let it set for an hour or so. Next I wipe the whole thing down with a shammy. Every couple of months I strip the plastics all off and hand wash everything. You would be amazed how much crud gets in at the seams. The pressure washer/tire foam shines the plastic up real nice. Like others have said though...just be careful were you spray...

I'll second the BlingKing suggestion of a small pressure washer. I've got a small yellow electric Karcher unit that is pretty nice and fairly cheap. It even has a soap and wax dispenser built in and maxes out around 1000 PSI. It cuts the cleaning time and water waste down. Just don't blast any seals or joints too close.

i used to pressure wash everything on my brute. even under the seat. i still would do it except i dont have a pressure washer anymore. so just a hose for me.

back when my quad was that candy thunder blue color, i used to polish and wax the plastics once a month. it looked awesome. then spray tire foam on all the suspension. used to look brand new all the time.
