I look forward to exploring ATV winch safety in this thread. Every year many people die or get seriously injured with improper use of winches.
Using strap for both the tree and rock Strap rated at 5000 pounds.
Keeping fingers and hands away from fairlead, using gloves to protect hands a must.
Never let your hand get caught behind hook and and drawn into fairlead

Another piece of advice
When pulling with the steel cable put a blanket or coat over the cable, if the hook should snap this will cause the cable to drop to the ground and slow the cable down from the whiplash.
