These are excellent for ATVers hunting, camping etc.

The Garmin Rino series of Radio/GPS units are perfect for ATVers, Hunters and Campers!

Waterproof, and full featured. One VERY cool feature is that when you talk to someone else on another Rino, their position shows up on the GPS map page! Thus, you can see where all the people on your channel are at in relation to your position!

Below is a link that details the features of these very cool units. They mount to handlebars, windshields etc. Several mounts, and accessories available for them. All models above the 110 feature voice scrambling as well.

I spent the bucks and went all the way with the 530hcx. I havnt been disapointed. It take a little getting use to if u are not already using a garmin but not bad if u are. The radio works great and the mount for it works perfect on my King 6o mph and not a worry.

Yes they are nice IF your riding, hunting, etc. partner has one. If not then.................

Some of my hunting friends have them but I prefer the regular Etrex type myself.

Lionhart & Arizona Griz,

When two unit are TRACKING each other, what technology is used? By satelite signals or standard radio waves?

How well does this feature work? Please answer each question.

Lionhart & Arizona Griz please dialogue each others opinions in this thread. I think this is worth buying if it is a reliable means to track one another.

I'm thinking because it has a limited two mile limit it tracks by radio signal and that could be spotty???
Thank you, Nuck.

I think Garmin GPS's are the best hands down.

I have no need for a Rino so I will never get one. I don't hunt with anyone so I don't need to know where they are. We mostly ride in groups and all of my friends use Garmins and we all have the MapSource Topo maps downloaded in them. There is really not much else to say.

I do not know the technology used between the two radios for tracking, sorry.

Look for refurbs....Rino 530's can be had for around $230.

A friend gave me one for a b'day gift.....a refurb. I forgot
where he got it, but I'm sure a resourceful person can Google/search
and find a reputable source.

The transmission for possitioning is radio based and cant be used with any repeat equiptmnet. that is a down side but if u know how to use gmrs radio and all the advantages that it has it is a great feature. When u get set up on a gmrs system the total range is only limited by the power of the repeator. 50 mi is a walk in the park. when i am in northern az phone coverage is spotty i can get the repeater from the local ranger station and hit my base camp 20 miles away. So yes it can be a investment but it is worth it depending on your needs. Also u dont have to have a rino to talk to a rino. The freq is standard and u can set them up to work with almost any gmrs station that is available just do the freq home work and u can set up your own radio network. The positon sending feature wasnt a real perk for me anyway because you can always communicate Lon. Lat. numbers and find the same thing

I have a 110 and a 120.
I found both in pawn shops.

I paid $75 for the 110 and $85 for the 120. Both like new.

Watch eBay, Craigs list and your local pawn shop for a good deal on a used one.

Hi Turbobrute - Question. I read on the GPS info link you provided that a Rhino 120 radio has only 1 watt transmitting power on the GMRS mode. Yet Garmin states the Rhino is a 5 watt radio, doesn't this mean it transmitts at 5 watts? Thanks

Gowen

The wattage depends on what model of rino from the 120 to the 530

Sorry I didn't see your question earlier gowen!
I see it has been answered.
I really like the 120. More memory too.
I need to watch closer! I see a 120 was just auctioned off last month.
I'd like to upgrade my 110 to a 120 so I have a pair of 120's.

Rino 110 can be found for about $140
Rino 120 can be found for about $167
Rino 130 can be found for about $260
Rino 520hcx can be found for about $325
Rino 530hcx can be found for about $350

Click on the above links to view Garmin's product description. User manuals are also available to view online.
****BE WARNED**** When considering purchasing a 530HCX be certain that you are in fact purchasing a 530hcx. There are discontinued 530 models out there on the internet and at some Walmart for closeout. The 530 does not have a MicroSD expansion slot.

Also, older versions only allowed the GPS peer to peer position data to tranmitted at .5 watt per the FCC restrictions. New models now with GMRS have been granted authorization from the FCC to transmit at higher wattage levels.
