Dunlop Quadmax Tiresby hawknchaucer, 2007-08-21My 1999 Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4 has been a great ATV for me to ride. Plenty of power, and low maintenance. The stock tires though were getting old and I was having trouble in the mud, sand, and climbing hills. I wanted an all terrain tire so I selected the Dunlop Quadmax, the AR25x8-12 for the front and the AR25x11-12 for the back. The Dunlop Quadmax ATV tire design has come a long way from the Dunlop tires found on original equipment. The tread is much more capable on a variety of terrains and the casing is thicker giving it far greater puncture resistance, yet the Quadmax is still significantly lighter than many other aftermaket tires. This helps out smaller bored ATVs tremendously by not robbing power and ruining the fun. Photo: Getting ready for the ride - the new Quadmax tread made my trailer loading easier with its aggressive tread pattern and deeper lugs. ![]() Handling: I selected a site in NC called Forest Games to try out these new tires. It had a range of terrain that would give me a good idea of how these tires would perform in flat-trail, mud, hill, sand, water and rock climbing. From the moment the atv hit the ground I knew I was in for some fun. For me, I love to see the grass torn up as I make easy circles. These tires really gripped the flat trails. I also noticed that the cornering was really good, with no excessive sidewall flex. I used 5 pounds of pressure to make sure that there a good balance between ride and handling, yet still allow bite over logs and rocks. ![]() Mud: My favorite thing to do is play in the mud. I will go out of my way to find a good stretch of thick, soupy, and deep mud. I found a huge patch and dove in. The pics here clearly show how the tires did. I didn’t need to muscle the atv to get through the deep spots. The tires gripped the mud and cleaned themselves as they surfaced. In moments I was confident that I could go play here for a while. ![]() Rock: I headed down to the river and found a difficult spot to test the rock and wet gripping ability of the Quadmax tires. There is a spot where you have to climb a difficult rock mound, then, cross a patch of soft sand to land in a cascading water playground. The rock is slick and treacherous in the river. These tires performed beautifully. I even backed into some holes to see if I could crawl out. No problems here - I love these tires. ![]() Climbing: This particular area had trails that were deeply rutted. Imagine a steep hill with deep ruts. Worse right? Well this proved a good test for the side walls and the tread near the edges of the tire. Again, no problems here with this tire. The gripping was superb. ![]() Price: The Quadmax tires start around $75 per tire which I consider a bargain for a set of brand name tires with this level of performance. Quadmaxes are available in the following sizes: Front Sizes: AT 25x8-12 AT 24x9-11 AT 24x8-12 Rear Sizes: AT 25x10-12 AT 25x11-10 AT 25x11-12 At the end of the day I have to say that the ride was smooth and controlled. The traction on the trails, the hills, the mud, the rocks and sand was superb. The price is great too. If you are looking for an upgrade to your worn, original tires then look at these Quadmax tires. An all around great tire. Dunlop Tire Company www.dunlopatv.com |
