Carlisle Mud Wolf Tires

by nyroc, 2006-11-19

When I first saw Carlisle's new Mud Wolf, I knew I wanted to test them on my Grizzly. They have a unique cleaning tread design for mud, with holes in the knobs to improve dry grip, and side knobs to improve traction on ruts and washouts. Carlisle sent me a 26" set per my request, which is the diameter I usually choose as a trade off between power lost and mud superiority of larger diameter tires.

I mounted the Mud Wolfs on my 2007 Grizzly 700 and went to my favorite private riding area full of sand, rocks, mud and dirt trails. The mud performance was sweet, as I expected from a tire with this tread design (knob depth, cleanout pattern). But I was actually extremely impressed at how well these tires hooked up on dirt. The overlapping tread design created a smooth ride on pavement and hardpack. The flexibility of the tall 1-1/8" knobs allowed an excellent grip on rocks, logs and streambeds. The trail handling was very good also. The rear tires are the widest 12" tires I have measured, and helped make riding through sandy creekbeds a simple task.

Nyroc Notes:

  • Sizes: This tire comes in 9x25-12, 12x25-12, 9x26-12, 12x26-12, 9x27-12, 12x27-12 sizes. The rear Mud Wolf tires measured about 11.75 wide, which is still wider than other 12" wide tires I have measured. Care should be taken to make sure you can fit a tire this wide. Measure your clearance and tire width, and remember that half the difference will go inward unless you get wheels with more outward spacing.
  • UTVs: The sidewalls and casing are very rigid (6 ply). These tires are actually stiffer than other 6 ply tires I have seen, which Carlisle informed me makes them also very well suited for use on heavier UTV vehicles to maintain best handling characteristics.
  • Puncture resistance: I believe these tires will be very, very puncture resistant as well due to their heavy duty casing and knobby sidewall armor, and may even get you back to your truck without air pressure (which I am sure can only happen if the valve stem is damaged).
  • Weight: The Mud Wolf is heavier than a lot of other tires, which can make it not a good of a choice for people that wish to drag race. I did notice a bit more power loss than I did with other lighter (but less capable) tire I have tested on the Grizzly.

    Nyroc highly recommends this tire

Photo: I had an absoulte riot in Busco Beach in the mud with these tires. But, I still got stuck when I was high centered between ruts by someone else with 30" tires.

Does anybody know where I can get Carlisle Mud Wolf Tires for a decent price? I was going to get the 25x8 - 12 for the front and the 25x11 - 12 for the rears because they will fit the stock Eiger wheels. Can someone tell me if a 26x9 - 12 and 26x12 - 12 will fit on the stock Eiger wheels. I would like the 26 inch tires if they will work.

    Thanks!

I rode them at Busco Beach on saturday and I absolutely loved them. I will take them out again for sure on muddy rides. These tires are extremely good on dry rides too. I am impressed with everything, except I think they were bit heavier than my other tires. Oh well, that is the price I have paid for better traction.

A friend of mine just got a set for his 03 660 grizzly, just got them mounted today I think. I'll find out firsthand how well they do, as compared to my 589's, another friend has a new set of Zilla's and yet another has a new set of mudlite XL's, we all wanted to be different when it came to tires, will find out which ones are the best ultimately.

got mine mounted tonight!!! 27x9x12's in front, 27x12x12's rear. they fit on the stock wheels with no problem. these are a very heavy tire, about 2 pounds heavier on the rear than my bearclaws, and about 1 pound more on the front. these are some very stiff tires. these tires will hold their shape with my full weight(270 pounds) on them unmounted!!!! i literally sat on the front tire without a rim and it held it's shape. same on the rear, didn't even flatten out. these would be a great tire for a UTV . i have no doubt that you can ride all day with no air pressure as long as the bead doesn't pop off.
sitting in the garage with 5 pounds in the tires my prairie sits a full 2 inches higher than it did with the 26" bearclaws (measured at the floorboards).i will get some actual measurements tomorrow,as well as a ride report and some pics.
first impressions on these tires was that i made a mistake and should have gotten smaller tires, but after mounting them i think it will be fine.

A follow up on a recent post of mine, I would have to say that the mud wolf tires are outstanding mud tires, have had a chance to see how they do on my friends 660 grizzly and am very impressed, even in just the stock 25" size, only time he got stuck was when he got high centered and we went through some brutal trails that took everything my 589's and my other friends new mudlite XL's to get through, had to winch out several times, very glad I spent the money to get a winch as all three of us have winches but mine is the only one that actually works, even had my friends dad's little honda recon trying to follow us around part of the time, it tried as hard as it could but had to be pulled or pushed out several times, at least its much lighter and easier to get unstuck. Very fun weekend, weather in southern illinois was pretty nice, about 50 for the highs and not even extremely cold at night. But to get back to the subject, from what I've personally seen, these tires can hold their own with anything out there, some of the stuff we went through, none of us could make it, I would say all 3 tires did about equally well: mud wolf, mudlite XL, and 589, all in stock size all on stock 660 grizzlys with riders about the same weight as well, all of us around 200 lb, give or take a few lbs, im a little less and my other 2 friends are a little more, so I'd say it was a pretty fair comparison.

Here's a picture of dreamstalker75 with his new mud wolfs. I was very impressed with these tires, He used 2wd through holes that I sometimes had to use Diff lock to get through. On one particular muddy creek bank I had to take a couple of tries with all 4 tires locked up and even then I had to hit it hard from the bottom and barely clawed up it, He went from a dead stop and calmly walked up in 2WD

Thanks for the feedback. I have ridden them 3 times, and they are my favorite tires. They are not just good in mud, they are really good on rocks and hardpack. Carlisle got this tire right.

Photo: Not me! Nobody gets a picture of me struggling up a v-shaped washout when I have the Mud Wolfs on. I just buzz right up it. This machine doesn't have mud wolfs.

I was very impressed with the traction and overall handling of them. After I wear the mudlites out I think i'll try them in a 25 inch tire.

Nyroc, thanks for the excellent review of these tires. i purchased these tires hoping they would be "decent" on most trail situations and good in the mud and loose soil, but all i can say is i was very impressed. they really surprised me in the mud.i did not expect these tires to "work" as well as they do. they also did better than anything else i have ridden in rutted hills and "V-notched" hills. the extra side lugs will hold it on the sidewalls and walk right up or down notches or sides of ruts with no problem. where i was most impressed was in the rocks!these things gripped very well without trying to slide sideways . the one complaint i had was the weight of these things, they really eat up the power.

on a note about the weight, i'm sure the raised "pads" between the main lugs are there for a reason,my guess is too stiffen the casing to reduce flex on heavier units like the rhino and prowler. i wonder how much weight could be shaved by removing the "pads"? and would it hurt anything when used on a lighter atv?

I just ordered a set of 26' for my 800 X2, now Dreamstalker, when you say you loose a lot of power you think i will see a big difference even with a 800cc?

Also any of you's tried these tires in the snow?
