Yes I have accessed Dubinky Well road from 313, Are you camping at the mesa just off 313 and Dubinky well road? If so, then just stay on the Dubinky well road heading west, the turn off to Dubinky well heads north, don't turn north, stay on the main road heading west, until the road drops down into spring Canyon, follow all the way down into the canyon till you come to the cottonwoods and keep right, once you see the river, and a gate, you are on the Hey Joe trail, you will still be heading west. It's one way in and one way out, its hard to drive the ATVs up a 700 foot cliff, You got it! scramblin man, you should ride your stock brute for a while to get the feel for it before you put the Elkas on. that way you will appreciate what the Elkas do for the ride. they are great. what model of Elkas did you get?
BF1, i won't try to top your snow pictures lol. you have some great pics.
Coloradorockin - I don't have access to any quads other than rentals. I really wish that I could get her out on some other models, but I don't think it's going to happen. I also wish there were more smaller engined choices that had EFI and IRS, I think the KQ 450 is it. I wrote that one off because like you said it's identical in size to the KQ 700 but with a 450, so we're not getting a lighter or smaller quad. Not to offend but some of the posts I've read on the different message boards have me kind of leery of Suzuki's too. I'm actually not buying the Grizzly for the power, I'm buying it because it's the only way to get all the features that I want.... the power is just a bonus :-) Honestly if there were a 450 or 500 Grizzly with identical features to the 700 I would buy it for both of us.
Dhillis - I was at the dealer today and there is definitely a limiter bolt on the thumb throttle. I think I'll turn it in for her as first, but not for long.
Matt H - I'm interested in hearing about the problems too. The only problems I've heard so far is that some of them run hot when brand new. I think someone claimed that the problem went away after break-in.... not sure though.
700Grizzly - I still keep thinking about the Wolverine. It seems to be a great quad, I really like the price compared to the Grizzly. We are going to be riding tons of rocks though and I really think that the IRS will be a huge benefit.

Your planned adventure for Moab in March will not be disappointing, I have rode Moab in mid March
and it's still pretty cool in the mornings and that is when Moab gets most of it's moisture for the year. But if you go prepared you will have a great time. The Arch View is closed for the winter and they reopen in Mid March and it is pretty quiet but still riders in the area. If you take picture's most of your shot's can have the snow covered La Sal Mountains in the background.
If I can help you on a personal level let me know by giving me a PM. Thanks

Now your talking my other passion...Fishing. I have not fished the Colorado in Moab, but I know some big cat's have been pulled out of there. One of our scheduled ride's will be to Hey Joe Mine and just before we tackle the narrow trail along the river we stop for lunch at the bottom of Spring Canyon and is right at the shore of the Colorado River. That's where I would give it a shot for fishing. I have rode my ATV into the La Sals and fished the high mountain lakes also. But those lakes will still have two feet of snow around them in April.
In this picture you will see the river and the entrance to Spring Canyon two miles behind me. Hey RENO. I live in NW Oregon, about an hour and a half from the coast and about 1 mile from the Columbia River. That picture was taken outside of a small town called Westport on Hwy 30, near Nicoli Mnt. Needless to say we live in logging country. I don't know alot of details about the history of that area, but if I had to guess I would say that tree came down near the 20's. The guy on the stump is a guy I used to work with named Fred. He is a crappy photographer so I had to use the pic I took of him. The ones of me and my buddies didn't come out so good. That area is by far the most fun and most beautiful area I have yet to ride in. We spent about an hour and a half carving out a ramp to drive up onto it. It's kind of an attraction now. A few of my friends have had their pictures taken there. I am waiting with baited breath for fire season to be over so we can go back. The whole forest up there looks like that, except the giant stumps have rotted away. Although we just found a section of BLM land locally that is supposed to have some 150+ year old-growth. I will definitely take some pictures if it's true.
If your ever in the neighborhood, drop me a line and we'll get a shot of you up there too. I really like the one of the water-push in the creek you posted too by the way. SHOWCASE PHOTO 2nd Annual Arizona Camp & Ride -Feb 09 AZquadrider: Ok Fridays ride (02-20-09) had a much bigger crowd. Justin aka Full Throttle (with Kawasaki)came over from California and brought 2 Kawasaki Brute Force 750I ATV’s to test on the rocks of Arizona. I have to say I sure do like the looks of the red machine and the sound is Great. It sounds like a small block V-8. Can’t wait to test the full locker.
Everyone had breakfast and got their rigs together for a group shot before we all headed over to a trail called Upper Woodpecker. There are some Indian Pictographs at the beginning of the trail. The trail is in a wash and has lots of fun obstacles along the way.
Steve gave us a scare at the start of the trail on the first big boulder crawl. It is a large rock with a couple of step ups similar to the rocks in Moab Utah. Well Steve missed the line on the first step and it sent him to the right. This is where it all went wrong, he now was headed for a dip and a straight up part of the rock where he nailed the throttle and went over backwards and to the right. It was a frightful sight for me as he was coming right at me but I was too far away to help. For a split second I dropped the camera but kept shooting. The sound a quad makes when it is going over is dreadful. As I saw the heavy Polaris laying flat on its top with no sight of Steve I had a sick feeling in my stomach, but within a second I saw a hand come out and then Steve crawled out from under his quad unscathed. It seems there was a small hole under his quad that he was lucky enough to fall into. Steve got incredibly lucky to come away with just a few broken parts on his ATV and not a scratch on him.
Let’s not have any more of this on our ride. I will say I thought some of the riders might turn around and go back to camp at this point and I wouldn’t have blamed them but everyone stayed on for the adventure. For the rest of the riders going up this boulder there were lots of spotters. We always try to avoid roll over’s but sometimes it happens.
For having such a big group we went through the trail at a pretty good pace. Everybody was willing to help out a fellow rider if they needed it. Of course there was always a show to watch at some of the better obstacles. Insane Zane and Toad were battling to see who could take the nastiest line and of course Jim was smooth as silk.
At the end of the trail is Dave’s rock. This is where he went over last year. Zane, Toad and Justin took turns going over the rock. I have to say they made it look easy but it is anything but easy. That boulder can have you on your lid in an instant.
Next we went over to the Ajax Mine. This was a large mine back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its kind of fun to look around at all the stuff they brought in to make their mine work.
From here Jim led us on a scenic ride across the tops of some of the mountains, down a wash and back up the other side. There was a nasty hill climb some took while the others took a bit easier route. Along the way there was a jump that Zane, Justin and Toad took turns airing out their machines. They had some monster air.
Well thats it for this adventure. Time to get back to camp.
Follow the link to ride 3 gallery 3 ride I took this week AZquadrider: Friday afternoon (02-20-09) 5 of us decided to tackle one of the hardest trails in the area. There was Zane (Kawasaki 700 Prarie) Toad (Yamaha 700 Grizzly) Justin (Kawasaki 750 Brute Force) Don (Kawasaki 750 Brute Force 750I) and Derick in a Yamaha 700 Rhino.
The trail is called Highway to Hell. It is less than a mile long and as we found out it took us over 4 hours to run. I had been up about half of this trail with Jim quite awhile ago. We weren’t sure how long it was and we were running out of daylight so we turned around.
We found out why the trail was named Highway to Hell as when you are well into it, it feels like Hell getting over all the obstacles.
The first nasty spot you have to climb up a wedge and over a small waterfall. We all thought ok, that was easy. Next there were several more big rocks to climb over. Everyone was doing great. There were a couple of spots where the Rhino got high centered but nothing major.
Then around the corner is a large double waterfall you have to climb. We assessed the situation and decided to put a rope on the front of the ATV and ride it straight up the waterfalls. I was 1st in line so it was time to give it a go. I put the Brute Force 750I in low range 4 wheel drive, grabbed the full locker lever and launched straight up the waterfall without any problems. The same with the 2nd waterfall. Next came Justin follower by Toad and then Zane. It is amazing how that the quads will go straight up as long as you can hold the front wheels down to the rock. I’m not saying the guys pulling on the rope didn’t work hard but without the quad having all 4 tires digging it would not happen. Now it was time to get Derrick’s Rhino over the 2 waterfalls. He lined up on the first one with the rope attached and climbed to the top. The 2nd waterfall is much higher so Zane suggested hooking the rope to his quad to help pull. That worked great as Derrick did a great job of keeping on the throttle. What a blast…
After a short break for some much needed water we headed on up the wash. We thought the worst was over but it was far from over. Each time we came around another corner there were bigger and tougher obstacles. We would say to each other we must be close to the end and then there was more. There was a big wedge you had to negotiate just right to make it. Justin fell in the hole so Zane got some extra riding time by hanging off the left site to try to keep the Brute Force off the boulders on its side. It was starting to get late and we started to wonder if we were going to make it out before dark.
Then we come around a corner and there is another large rock we would have to rope over. The ATV made it up fairly easy but it had such a sharp angle weren’t sure about the Rhino. It looked like it would get high centered. Once again Zane hooked up the rope to his quad to pull the Rhino over the top. I got on the side of his quad for extra traction and Derrick hit it. He was just past halfway up the boulder when my ½ inch thick rope broke. You can see in the photos the rope it tight and when it breaks the front of his Rhino came up. Thank goodness it stayed on the rock just teetering. At this point we got out Derricks tow strap, hooked it up but between Zane pulling and Derrick nailing the throttle there just wasn’t enough traction to make it up. Time for plan B. Three of us got behind the Rhino and lifted as they tried it again. Yea, it worked.
One more corner and Wow there is the end, but look at the last obstacle. A big waterfall. Oh boy, here we go again. As we get closer there is somewhat of a go around to the right of the waterfall. Good thing because this one is about 10 feet tall straight up. Toad was 1st as he roared up the off camber side and stopped at the top. We were all there to grab his Grizzly but it was not easy standing on the side of a steep hill. One more push to the left over some rocks and whew, he is out. The rest of us went to school on Toads line and kept the throttle on a bit more to roll through the off camber spot. It was not easy because if you were to use to much throttle it could throw you off to the left with the quad rolling over you and down the water fall. It was quite intiminidating to say the least. Now one last vehicle, the Rhino. Derrick lined up and we took our positions. Nobody wanted to be on the downhill side just in case. Derrick hit it and flew up the side hill, as he was at the top I started yelling go, go, go, go. Wow we made it, had a blast and nobody got hurt.
Toad said we must all be sick bustards to think all that pushing and pulling was a ball. Yes Toad we are……
The trail from here was smooth as glass compared to what we had been on. It was time to get back to camp. It was a beautiful ride back from here as the sun was starting to set.

Two years running we have had people not want to take the steep narrow trail down into the canyon. They turned around and went home. To some its a cake walk, others it not their cup of tea. It's dangerous if you arn't watching what your doing. Like looking up at the sky and thinking about other things. Most pay very close attention and that's makes it safe.
I get more nervous seeing people looking over the edge than I do seeing them drive into the canyon. One slip and your dead. Plain and simple.
