CVT mod (Coop45 mod) - 700/750

by MUDDking, 2007-04-26

Coop45 Thought of this mod for you guys and gals.

You shim out the primary sheaves to let the v-belt drop further down in the primary sheaves, and let the secondary clutch close more together, the v-belt will actually rise out of the secondary when done, lowering the ratio for improved bottom end, and lower ratio hold back. Clutch mod, 2 mm shim out, 22mm I.D, AND 32.5mm O.D
These are available from Yamaha dealerships as adjustment shims for the secondary clutch on a 1999 Mountain max 700 snowmobile.

90201-222F0-00 WASHER, PLATE (Thickness=0.5)

2 MM of shim is the max you can go before both running out of spline, and running out of clearance inside the front clutch cage.
This mod basically lengthens the primary collar by 2mm longer.
Here is a video of the install by Mudsoldier4.

This mod will decrease top speed... approx. 3-5mph... but you gain that on the bottom end. The effect is essentially the same as reducing the final drive gearing by about 5%.

If you want to gain back the lost top speed, see Coop's fixed plate mod tech tip. This will give you the low end take off of the shims and eliminate the effect of the shims above the mid part of the power band.

Here is were you put the 2mm thick shim or shims.

Here are some Pictures for the visual learners

2mm is the MAX you can add.

Put shims on first, and then the spacer.

Make sure you have at least 2mm of spline sticking out.

If you put more than 2mm of shim in, you might run a little thin on splines on the shaft for the outer cap to grab, also the support cage will rub.
This mod will give you a lower ratio hold back for sure
and improved take off(because of the lower ratio).

The shims are from polaris snowmobile water pump pulley shims, you can also use trany shims that are 22mm I.D, and 32.5mm O.D, mine were 1mm thick, any good hardened shim should be fine though.

I believe the labels on this pic are reversed. The Coop45 mod results in the belt riding lower and in a tighter circle around the front clutch, and in compensating the rear clutch closes further and the belt rides higher there. The inner and lower mark will represent the original belt running location at lowest reduction and the mark closer to the rim the new post Coop45 mod lowest reduction.
